Introduction:

This project has been designed to help you answer the question “How has immigration and settlement influenced who we are as Canadians?”

The Assignment:

You have been assigned a cultural group that has had an impact on Canada’s identity as a country. Your task is to gather information about that group and teach the rest of your classmates about them through a presentation. You will be working in groups to gather and present your information. When researching, consider the following questions:

  • When did they come?
  • Why did they come?
  • Where did they settle?
  • What happened and what did they do when they got here?
  • How has their presence impacted or changed Canada?
  • How did their coming affect the First Nations people?

Some cultures have significant historical events tied to them (Underground Railroad, potato famine, building of the railroad, internment camps, poverty and genocide, Indian’s being refused entry) These should be addressed when appropriate.

Presenting:

You and your group can choose how you will present your information. Keep in mind that you need to answer all the questions while keeping your audience interested. Would you want me to stand at the front of the room and run through slide after slide about something while reading off a paper that covers my face? Didn’t think so! Discuss with your ideas with your facilitating teacher.
Presentations should be around 5 minutes.
